Clinical studies

CARDIAC PAIN: UC San Diego Health System is beginning a two-year study to examine the safety of a non-invasive cardiac shock wave procedure for patients with angina pectoris ---- chest pain caused by insufficient blood flow to the heart. Cardiac shock wave technology sends low-intensity energy to specific areas of the heart to stimulate the growth of new blood vessels and relieve pain. The trial consists of three 20-minute sessions per week over nine weeks. Evaluations include a physical exam, treadmill tests, blood work and a drug-induced stress/rest test. Contact research study coordinator Muppy Haigler at 619-543-6678 or mhaigler@ucsd.edu .

BREAST CANCER: Researchers at the Moores UC San Diego Cancer Center are recruiting women for a diet and exercise program to reduce postmenopausal breast cancer risk through lifestyle change. The Healthy Eating & Living Program for Weight Control study uses Internet-enhanced telephone counseling to help women improve their health habits. The study will track weight, health habits, physical activity, diet and quality of life over 12 weeks. Eligible women must be between ages 45 to 70, be overweight or obese, want to increase their physical activity and improve their diet, and have high-speed Internet access.
