Weight-loss surgery opens door to new way of life Northwest Herald

CRYSTAL LAKE – Six weeks after having weight-loss surgery, grocery shopping turned into an endurance event for Betty Koczwara and Jennifer Koczwara.

The Crystal Lake mother and daughter spent more than an hour filling up their cart on a recent trip. They scanned the nutritional label of every item before putting it in the cart, passing up anything high in fat or sugar. Some French onion soup that made it past the check-out counter had to be thrown away later when they realized it had 4 grams of sugar per serving.

“We have to be very careful,” Jennifer Koczwara said.

Proper consumption is essential. After bariatric gastric bypass surgery, fatty, sugary foods could pass right through the stomach without digestion and land in the small intestine, producing a sickening reaction few are soon to forget. Perhaps more importantly, heeding the advice of doctors and dietitians will help the Koczwaras lose weight and be healthy.

Betty Koczwara, 61, weighed 355 pounds before having surgery in April. At the six-week weigh-in she had lost 50 pounds since the operation. Jennifer Koczwara, her 29-year-old daughter, had lost about 40 pounds from her pre-surgery weight of 374 pounds. Eventually, both hope to weigh about 200 pounds or less.
