Bariatric surgery cuts risk of pregnancy disorders Tech Jackal

A recent study conducted by researchers at John Hopkins University suggests that women who undergo Bariatric weight loss surgery, before pregnancy, are at lesser risk of developing blood pressure disorders. These blood pressure disorders include common problems such as gestational hypertension, preeclampsia and eclampsia.

Research

All of these complications are known to cause pregnancy complications. Researchers relied on data provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance. The sample constituted 585 women. Among these were 269 women who underwent Bariatric surgery after pregnancy and 316 women who had this surgery before pregnancy. Results gained from data offered conclusive evidence that women who have Bariatric weight loss surgery before pregnancy faced 80 percent reduction in risks associated with preeclampsia and eclampsia. Similarly, risks of gestational and chronic hypertension decreased by 74 percent and 61 percent, respectively.
