Local man, woman: Weight-loss procedure saved their lives Daily Comet

Both credit the weight-loss procedure gastric banding, better known as lap-band surgery, with saving their lives.

The local residents, along with other lap-band recipients from the area, were honored at an April 28 red-carpet ceremony sponsored by Surgical Weight Management Associates of Houma. The event was patterned after a Hollywood premier and featured stars with patients' names on them.

While gathering to share each other's success was nice, the fact that they've managed to keep their weight off, due in part to the procedure, is the biggest joy, they say.

“I was always an extremely good dieter and I actually lost over 100 pounds two or three times over the years,” said Cenac who received the surgery in September 2007. “I had gotten to a point where I gained the weight back and couldn't see myself going through another diet, because when I looked at the statistics, they said 95 percent of people who lose weight gain it right back — and that was me.”
